WashingTongue Post Hole

It's all about peace and justice. Anti-war, yes, but more than that. It is about thinking for yourself, deinstutionalzing, taking the military out of the hands of corrupt leader. Together we can make it happen.

Nordhaus and Shellenberger: Two Environmentalists Anger Their Brethren

Nordhaus and Shellenberger: Two Environmentalists Anger Their Brethren

"If this book doesn't piss off a whole lot of conservatives and a whole lot of liberals, we've failed," Nordhaus says.

The two have reimagined the underlying philosophy of environmentalism in a way that could win over many of its natural skeptics, from financially insecure Americans who view green activists as elitist snobs to the leaders of developing countries like Brazil, India, and China who think environmentalists want to stop economic growth just when they were about to get their share. Green groups may carp, but the truth is that the book could turn out to be the best thing to happen to environmentalism since Rachel Carson's Silent Spring.

Democratizing the Global Economy

Democratizing the Global Economy:
"Currently, the rules of the global economy are written by institutions such as the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund. These institutions have written global policy with input mainly from multinational corporations and very little input from citizens. "

Kelpie Wilson | "The 11th Hour" and Generation Z

Kelpie Wilson | "The 11th Hour" and Generation Z:

"If 'The 11th Hour' is not a complete story, it is deliberate, because the intent is to involve and motivate the viewer as an actor in the ultimate story - a story to be written by the current generation. Throughout the film, DiCaprio as narrator returns to the idea that his generation will be the 'pivotal generation' that 'will heal industrial civilization.'"

"The idea of being a pixel in the larger collective vision is appealing. And as more people join to create the vision, more will be motivated to join.

One example of how this is happening is that DiCaprio's film is not unique. A few weeks ago, I received a review copy of a new film called "What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire," by VisionQuest Pictures. This film carries an endorsement from Daniel Quinn, author of the prophetic eco-novel, "Ishmael": "The two hours of the documentary are two hours that bring hope for the future of humanity by awakening and informing in the most profound yet lucid way imaginable."

Iraq War about Oil

Consortiumnews.com: "No, not from the lips of former Secretary of State Colin Powell. It appears we shall have to wait until the disgraced general/diplomat draws nearer to meeting his maker before he gets concerned over anything more than the “blot” that Iraq has put on his reputation. Rather, the uncommon candor comes from a highly respected Republican doyen, economist Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006, whom the president has praised for his “wise policies and prudent judgment.” Sadly for Bush and Cheney, Greenspan decided to put prudence aside in his new book, The Age of Turbulence, and answer the most neuralgic issue of our times—why the United States invaded Iraq."

It only took 6 years for officialdumb to say what anyone with a brain larger than a pea knew before the occupation.

Deep Economy by Bill McKibben

Book Review:Book Review: Deep Economy by Bill McKibben on the Guerrilla News Network

I just finished the book and it was much above expectations. I think every college economics course should require it as a companion to whatever standard text is used. The information contained is too important to be left to experts, such is the essence of a liberal education! It is the kind of alternate view that students, and this includes all citizens of a responsible world, need to make critical choices about the future of the world in which they will live.

It is required reading in my opinion.

U.S. Climate Emergency Council - No Time for Activism As Usual

U.S. Climate Emergency Council - No Time for Activism As Usual:

"Future Hope column, August 6, 2007 No Time for Activism as Usual By Ted Glick “The Weather Makers,” a book by Tim Flannery, is one of the best sources for those who want to understand the global heating process that is seriously destabilizing the world’s climate. In it, Flannery explains the three main ‘tipping points’ “that scientists are aware of for Earth’s climate: a slowing or collapse of the Gulf Stream; the demise of the Amazon rainforests; and the release of gas hydrates from the sea floor. . . There is some geological evidence for all having happened in Earth’s history. . . Given the current rate and direction of change, one, two or perhaps all three may take place this century.

"Mahatma Gandhi, probably the greatest nonviolent revolutionary of the 20th century, once said that, “Fasting is the sincerest form of prayer.” Beginning now, deepening on September 4th and for some of us for weeks afterward, let us pray and act not just for future generations but for those living right now."
