WashingTongue Post Hole

It's all about peace and justice. Anti-war, yes, but more than that. It is about thinking for yourself, deinstutionalzing, taking the military out of the hands of corrupt leader. Together we can make it happen.

Truthdig - Reports - Why Cheney Really Is That Bad

Truthdig - Reports - Why Cheney Really Is That Bad

“Bush’s Brain” may be gone, but his “Soul” lives on. It is high time all of America put Dick Cheney fully in the spotlight of collective accountability, purging our nation of this scourge which has harmed us in so many ways. If there is any case for impeachment to be made against any member of the Bush administration today, it can be made against a vice president who has shamed our nation, destroyed our moral standing and broken our laws.

AxisofLogic/ What Freedom? What Democracy?:

"Where is the democracy in a country and in a world that is being run by transnational corporations? Where even the Congress is tied down by bonds of dependency to Corporate America, Republicans and Democrats alike."

Nitrogen Overdose

Inside Bay Area - Nitrogen Overdose:

I call it the biggest global change that nobody has ever heard of, Weiss said at the spring event. The planet has never seen this much nitrogen at any time. Human activity now releases 125 million metric tons of nitrogen from agricultural activities and fossil fuel combustion a year, compared to 113 million metric tons annually from natural sources, according to a 2007 United Nations report called Human Alteration of the Nitrogen Cycle.

Colin Powell’s responsibility | openDemocracy:

Wilkerson and Bodine have spoken out before. But Armitage's debut in particular has the White House fuming and fretting that it somehow signals Powell's emergence as a full-throated critic in the middle of September's PR offensive. The national-security advisor Stephen Hadley, according to sources close to him, has voiced anger and concern about whether Powell will step forward and what he might say, and other presidential aides are wondering how to cope with that nightmarish possibility.

FT.com / World - Learn from the fall of Rome, US warned:

"The US government is on a ‘burning platform’ of unsustainable policies and practices with fiscal deficits, chronic healthcare underfunding, immigration and overseas military commitments threatening a crisis if action is not taken soon, the country’s top government inspector has warned. David Walker, comptroller general of the US, issued the unusually downbeat assessment of his country’s future in a report that lays out what he called “chilling long-term simulations”."

A Global Warming Bill We Can Work With | Campaign for America's Future

Last month, a bipartisan global warming bill from Sens. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., and Arlen Specter, R-Penn., was uniformly rejected by environmental organizations, because it kept down the cost for creating carbon pollution, making it impossible to reduce enough pollution to resolve the climate crisis.

This month, a new bipartisan bill from Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and John Warner, R-Va. is being praised as a "huge breakthrough" by dedicated environmentalist Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California.

The US's Ramshackle Infrastructure: When Will the Next Bridge Collapse? - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News:

"The Minneapolis bridge disaster is no isolated incident but a warning signal: More than 160,000 road bridges in the USA are considered to be in danger of collapse. Highways, tunnels, dams and dykes are in such miserable condition that engineers have long been ringing the alarm -- so far in vain."

Expedition to the North Pole: French Oil Giant to Measure Arctic Melt - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News

How much truth is there to the dire warnings of melting polar ice caps? A team now plans to embark on a spectacular trip to find out just how thin the ice in the Arctic really is. The group is an odd alliance consisting of a French adventurer, a German scientist and a multinational oil corporation.

Every Frenchman knows Etienne, their short, wiry Arctic hero, more famous in France than even mountain-climbing legend Reinhold Messner is in Germany. When Etienne embarks on an expedition, it's front-page news in the French papers.
